Artist's Statement
My subject matter is as varied as the universe we live in. The earth is teeming with so many intriguing life forms: humans with their wide range of faces and emotions, a vast world of animals and creatures, flowers and plant life, all amid stunning scenery. I try to capture the beauty in these things, and the feelings of awe I have for them, visually describing them so that others might see and appreciate as I do. In this chaotic world of today, simple gifts of beauty are all the more important to take pleasure in! When I am successful, my art connects me to people and life in a way that is stronger than words.
In painting my subjects, what appeals to me most is gorgeous, outrageous color, coupled with dramatic lighting and strong, often unexpected composition. I like colors and shapes lit brilliantly and contrasted by deep shadows that take your eye back into a painting, and edges that lose themselves and melt away into the painting. Details amuse and amaze me, and I frequently like to paint them larger than life, forming paintings almost abstract in design.
Pastel is my medium of choice, although I paint comfortably in oil, acrylic, and watercolor, as well. I adore pastel for the lusciousness of the colors- so many, like a gigantic candy boxful- for the spontaneity of the medium, and for the luminous, dreamy appearance of the finished work. I love that I can work fast and messy in pastel, like a kid again. Come play with me!
